What is the order of the Benedictines ?
Benedict of Nursia, in Italy (480-547) was a young Christian who trained in Rome, wanted to leave the city to devote himself to God. After a time spent in the desert, he gathered around him disciples who came to be under his guidance. Benedict divides them into several monasteries. He himself had settled at Mont Cassin around 525 where he died at the end of the sixth century. It is there that he wrote the "Rule of the monks", remarkable document, fruit of his experience
As time goes by, a network of Benedictine monasteries sets up to be present in the whole of Europe. The text of this Rule imposed itself by its wisdom, its discretion and its balance uniting general principles very clear but full of breadth and flexibility, spiritual exhortations and details of organization.
The West knew many other abbots and rules, but only that of Saint Benedict remained, Louis the Pious, son of Charlemagne having imposed in his empire to all the monasteries, the Assembly of Aix-la-Chapelle.
Among the most striking features of the life of the Benedictines, the family dimension is the framework that Saint Benedict wanted for the sanctification of the monks.
More than fifteen centuries have passed and the foundations have not changed. Nevertheless, things are changing and modern history has allowed the various abbeys to weld together by developing fraternal mutual aid.
How could an abbey have the idea to create skincare products ?
Called by the Church to live by their work, the Sisters of Chantelle started around 1950, in the design and manufacture of natural hygiene and toilet products. Two sisters are particularly involved: one, a chemist, will become responsible for the fabrications, and the other, mathematician, will be entrusted with accounting. Other sisters will be trained to develop, manufacture, pack and pack the products. The first products marketed are a toilet milk and colognes.
We are in August 1954, the brand Les Bénédictines de Chantelle is launched..
Do the sisters still work ?
Yes, the whole community is committed to you by working every day to achieve the products.
What are the cosmetic products for ?
More than 60 years ago, the Sisters developed Chantelle Milk for change, babies usually having a very fine and sensitive skin. They created Eau de Cologne, soaps because it helped the toilet and therefore participated in hygiene. Since then, the implementation of standards and the change in consumer habits have pushed them to evolve products to offer real skin care. They retain their basic properties for impeccable hygiene but now incorporate specific assets for immediate effectiveness.
Are the products made at the abbey ?
Only our "hard" soaps are not made at the abbey but still developed (we own the formulas) and packaged at home. All other products are developed, manufactured and packaged in the heart of the abbey.
Am I reactive to essential oils ?
An intolerance to an ingredient is quite possible. This is why you will find the complete and detailed composition of each of our products on their packaging but also on our website. When we integrate essential oils, a preservative, a foaming agent ... we use our knowledge of plants and formulation to minimize any risk of adverse reactions. In addition, our products are developed with independent toxicologist experts and under dermatological controls.
What is the money for ?
When you buy a product, we claim to believe that it's because you like it because of its intrinsic qualities (smell, texture, color), as well as for its presentation, then for its effectiveness but also a little bit to please us. Your purchases are used for the lives of sisters, employees, people in need and the maintenance of buildings that although classified as Historical Monuments are very expensive. By buying the products you allow us to live and participate in the preservation of an exceptional architectural heritage, a reflection of the history of France since 937.
