Monastic work at the Abbey of Sept-Fons

    
The Cistercian Trappist Abbey of Notre-Dame de Sept-Fons was founded in 1132 by the Abbey of Fontenay, itself daughter of Clairvaux, daughter of Cîteaux. Sept-Fons came out of anonymity around 1656, thanks to the reform introduced by its abbot, the young Dom Eustache de Beaufort, and then experienced one of its most flourishing periods, with up to 150 monks. Its current buildings, with mansard roofs and harmonious, date from the eve of the French Revolution. In 1791, the monks were expelled and the abbey was sold as national property.
 
After a long exodus, the monks are forced to buy their own abbey. They resumed monastic life there in 1845. From 1899 to 1935, under the abbatial of Dom Chautard, Sept-Fons founded several monasteries around the world and fought for its own economic survival by launching Germalyne®, the starting point of the range. Today, the Abbey of Sept-Fons has over 80 members, including many young people from all over the world. Faithful to the rule of St. Benedict, they strive to maintain a balance between prayer, study and work, especially manual work. While cereal cultivation is exclusively geared towards feeding their herd of dairy cows, the crops from their orchards, vegetable gardens and apiary barely cover the internal needs of the community. So the monks cannot be satisfied with agriculture for a living.

This is why the economy of the monastery is based on the activity of the MOULIN DE LA TRAPPE, entirely run by the monks. The abbey is equipped with an agro-food factory (mill, jam workshop, storage and shipping building). Since 1930, the flagship product has been Germalyne Tradition, the starting point for a whole range of natural products made or packaged at the monastery. A few other products, made by the monks, are made outside or by their brothers in Novy-Dvur.
