Notre-Dame d'Aiguebelle Abbey is a French Trappist abbey, founded in 1137. It is located in the Drôme Provençale near Montélimar. After enduring the Hundred Years War and the Black Death, the abbey emptied of its few occupants during the Revolution. Fortunately, it is saved from destruction and pillage thanks to its geographic isolation. In 1815, some Trappist monks came to settle at the monastery. The community then quickly developed: in 1850, the abbey had 233 monks! She then leaves to found other monasteries ... In particular Our Lady of the Atlas in Algeria, who will be famous because of the martyrdom of her brothers in Tibhirine. Today, the nineteen monks (in 2018) of Aiguebelle Abbey follow the rule of Saint Benedict "ora et labora" ("pray and work"). The monks pray eight times a day (the first service is at 3:30 am!). They also work with their hands to support themselves. The brothers rely in particular on the exceptional natural setting that surrounds the Notre-Dame d'Aiguebelle abbey to offer 100% natural artisanal products: lavender essential oil, honey, herbal teas, flour ... But their bestsellers are notably the baume d'Aiguebelle, a healing balm against muscular and respiratory problems, and l'Alexion d'Aiguebelle, a non-alcoholic energy drink!
