A permanent miracle!

Some say that the fact that a community of men or women can live together in this way is a permanent miracle! … Yes, getting to live together is a permanent miracle! … We did not choose ourselves. It is the desire to follow Christ that brought us together. Our community life therefore does not have a starting point and a purely human end. And that’s why it’s possible.
Good zeal

In the penultimate chapter of his Rule, St Benedict speaks of the good zeal that monks should have in relations with one another. I have read that this word zeal, by its Greek etymology, means the ardor of fire, something that burns. The good zeal of which St Benedict speaks to us therefore designates the interior fire which animates all the dimensions of our life and particularly our fraternal relations. The presence of this inner fire leads to charity, to love, therefore to joy. His absence would obviously lead to a series of frustrations. And it can happen, and it happens ...
Fight and joy

St Benoît is a practical and realistic man. He is not someone who would tend to supernaturalize the difficulties of community life. But with this “good zeal”, he invites us to know how to perceive all the positive and all the beauty that is hidden behind a sometimes rough surface, both in the community and in each of us who make it up. Thus, we experience the difficulties and the struggle of living together but we also taste the joys. We know that if we pay the price and if we lean on the One who brought us together, we help each other to live and exist fully.
